CRINKLE CRAGS

Crinkle Crags a name that invites you to find out what it is all about. And what a great fell it is, a treat of a day out!

Starting at Old Dungeon Ghyll we follow a ridge called The Band, passing White Stones and on to Three Tarns, the pass col between Bow Fell and Crinkle Crags. Whilst the views here are good, they only give a hint to what's to come.

Onward and upward to the summit of Crinkle Crags we can pause to take in the stunning view across to the Langdale Pikes and beyond. It is also a point to refuel on lunch or snacks ahead of our descent.

Avoiding the appropriately named Bad Step, we continue our walk on to Great Knott and dropping down to Red Tarn as we make our way to Oxendale. From here it is a gentler walk back to the car park and hopefully the National Trust cafe for a cuppa.

The distance is approximately 7 miles/11.2 kilometres, with a height gain of 2650 feet/807 metres.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

BLEA RIGG

An easier Lake District loop up a smaller and quieter Wainwright, but with the views worthy of a higher summit, it is well worth doing.
Starting in Grasmere our path takes us up to the tarns of Lang How, over Swinescar Pike and on to Little Castle How.

As we approach Blea Rigg the rocky summit looks more difficult than it actually is and provides some great places to stop, have lunch and admire the rewarding views across the fells.

Having fuelled up we start to make our way back down, stopping to admire Codale Tarn and Easedale Tarn. Then we continue our descent back into Grasmere and the cars.

The distance is approximately 12 kilometres/7.5 miles, with a height gain of/571 metres/1,870 feet

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

BOW FELL FROM NEW DUNGEON GHYLL

There is nothing like getting straight into it, and that is exactly what we do, as we head straight up the Langdale Pikes. On the way, there is a chance for some hands-on grade 1 scrambling before we get to our first summit of the day.

Next we negotiate some wet ground as we make our way to Angle Tarn and then Esk Hause. From here we continue to Ore Gap with its wonderful views of the Bow Fell summit. Onward we go to the highest point of the day, the 902m summit of Bow Fell, a great place to refuel and take in the rewarding view.

On our way down we come to Three Tarns before finding the start of The Band which will take us back down to the valley track. Then it’s an easy walk back to Grasmere and the cars.

The distance is approximately 18 kilometres/11 miles, with a height gain of 335 metres/1,020 feet.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

Dow Crag

CONISTON OLD MAN VIA DOW CRAG

It’s amazing how a name that includes ‘Old Man’ can seem familiar and easy. Whilst it isn’t the longest or highest walk in the Lake District, it isn’t to be underestimated.

Starting in Coniston our first peak is Brown Pike, continuing to Buck Pikes, passing Blind Tarn and then onto the spectacular Dow Crag.

After taking in the view, especially over Goat’s Water to our final destination Coniston Old Man, we make our way to Goats Hawse. Here it is worth pausing to look back at the grand rock face of Dow Crag.

Having caught our breath we make for the final ascent as we reach our high point of the day, Coniston Old Man 803m. Here we will take in the views and discover what an ‘Old Man’ actually is, apart from the obvious, before we start our descent.

As we make our way back down to Coniston we pass through some fascinating old mine workings, and can look down onto the old Copper Mines in the valley. We continue to follow Levelers Water Beck back into Coniston to find our cars and hopefully an open cafe

The distance is approximately 12 kilometres/7.5 miles, with a height gain of 820 metres/2,690 feet

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

DEEPDALE HORSESHOE

This is a classic Lake District horseshoe onto Fairfield. A big day which is worth every step over 6 Wainwrights.

Leaving Patterdale our climb starts quite quickly as we ascend Arnison Crag. After easing for a bit we find Birks, a nice grassy ridge line leading us onto St Sunday Crag.

After crossing Deepdale Hause is up to the crest of Cofa Pike with wonderful views down Deepdale and up to the next stop, Fairfield. This is also a great place to catch our breath and have a snack before the final ascent.

It’s a bit rocky on this last ascent and you might use your hands once or twice, but the views are stunning and it’s easy to become distracted by them. Once on the summit of Fairfield there is some satisfaction looking down at the ridge line descending past St Sunday Crag that we have just walked up. To the south is the amazing vista to Ambleside and way beyond.

Having recovered it’s time to start our descent, taking in Hart Crag on our way to Hartsop above How. This ridge line will take us all the way down to Bridgend for a gentle walk back to the cars in Patterdale.

The distance is approximately 10 miles/16 kilometres, with a height gain of 1050 metres/3,400 feet.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

HIGH STREET AND THE KNOTT

Whilst you might not find any shops on this High Street, it is a wonderfully rewarding walk and a step back in time.

Having set out from Hartsop we make our way to the shore of Heyswater before ascending to the top of The Knott with its great views down the Hayeswater valley. We continue along Racecourse Hill, where there were actual horse races, and onto the old Roman Road, High Street.

Soon after we arrive at the wonderful Thornthwaite Beacon, a great place to have lunch, catch our breath and admire the views. From here we make our way along Gray Crag to the top of the grassy ridge, which will take us back down into Hartsop and hopefully an open cafe.

The distance is approximately 13 kilometres/8 miles, with a height gain of 700 metres/2,297 feet.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

GREENBURN HORSESHOE

A grand Lakeland horseshoe which escapes the crowds drawn to more familiar names.

The first summit of the day, after setting out from Grasmere, is Steel Fell with its wonderful views towards Thirlmere to the north and Fairfield & Helvellyn to the east.

A broad ridge takes us past some tarns, as we find dry land for our ascent of Calf Crag. Continuing on we cross Pike of Carrs and on to Gibson Knott, and so begins our last ascent of the day.

The true summit of Helm Crag requires a short scramble for those who want to. To do so is rewarded by standing on what has been known as ‘the old lady playing the organ’, ‘the howitzer’ or ‘the lion couchant’. A little way along you will also find ‘the Lion and the Lamb.

Our descent takes us below White Crag through some woodland and back to Grasmere where hopefully we can find an open cafe.

The distance is approximately 12 kilometres/7.5 miles, with a height gain of 685 metres/2,250 feet.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

HELVELLYN VIA STRIDING EDGE
Striding Edge in the Lake District

HELVELLYN VIA STRIDING EDGE

A big walk on a big mountain as we climb the 3rd highest peak in the Lake District along one of the best known ridges, Striding Edge.

This classing Lake District horseshoe requires a head for heights. We start in Glenridding and make our way up to the beginning of the infamous ridge ‘Striding Edge’. A knife edge ridge which will require the use of your hands. Watch out for the views down to Ullswater and across the Grisedale Valley, because they are stunning and can be distracting.

Once we have negotiated the ridge is steep scramble on to the summit we can take stock of our achievement with fantastic views all the way down Striding Edge.

Having caught our breath and refuelled we take on our second ridge of the day, Swirral Edge. This easily underestimated ridge takes us to Catstye Cam, our second Wainwright of the day. From here we drop down to Red Tarn Beck which we follow down the valley, back to Glenridding and a well earned hot drink.

The distance is approximately 12 kilometres/7.5 miles, with a height gain of 880 metres/2,890 feet.

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.

SCAFELL PIKE

Scafell Pike is the highest point in England at 978m and this big mountain offers big rewards.

Setting out from Seatoller and seeing the towering mountains can feel a little overwhelming, yet also exhilarating at the same time. But at a nice steady pace we will conquer this mountain. Having made our way up Styhead Gill we catch our breath and soak in the beauty as the impressive Great Gable rises above us.

Then it’s up the Corridor Route across Spout Head and Skew Gill before we reach Lingmill Col where we will catch our breath before the final ascent to the top of the highest point in England.

Weather permitting the views make it all worthwhile, as does that brief moment of knowing that you are the highest person in England.

Then after lunch and rest, we set off for some more stunning views.

Out next stop is Great End, which offers one of our favourite views in the Lake District, all the way up Derwent Water. From here we skirt around the back of Great End, descending to Sprinkling Tarn. Here it is worth taking a look back to take in the grandeur of Great End from below.

We then pick up Ruddy Gill which will take us back to the familiar Stockley Bridge back through Seathwaite and on to Seatoller. Arriving back at the cars with a great sense of accomplishment.

The distance is approximately 16 kilometres/9.5 miles, with a height gain of 1150 metres/3,800 feet

The cost is £40 per person.  Please book and pay below.
